Frequently Asked Questions
3's Program
Does my 3-year-old really need preschool?
Every child is different, but age 3 is an important developmental stage. Preschool is about much more than learning letters and numbers.
Children are developing the social, emotional, language, physical, and cognitive foundations that support future learning.
At Harmony School, our goal is to help children develop confidence, independence, curiosity, and the readiness skills that make future learning easier and more enjoyable.
If my child will attend Universal Preschool (UPK) at age 4, why start at age 3?
Many parents assume preschool begins at age 4 because of Colorado's Universal Preschool program.
However, age 3 is when many of the foundational skills needed for success in PreK begin to develop.
Children who attend preschool at age 3 have the opportunity to:
-
Learn classroom routines
-
Build independence away from home
-
Practice following directions
-
Develop friendships and social confidence
-
Strengthen language and communication skills
-
Gain experience learning in a group setting
-
Enjoy learning in a more free-play environment before the structure of PreK and Kindergarten is necessary.
Rather than replacing one another, preschool at age 3 and UPK at age 4 often work together to create a smoother and more successful educational experience.
Isn't preschool mostly about socialization?
Social development is important, but quality preschool provides much more.
Young children learn through play, movement, conversation, exploration, and hands-on experiences.
These activities help build the foundational skills needed for future reading, writing, math, problem-solving, and communication.
Preschool prepares the whole child, not just academic skills.
How does preschool help prepare children for writing?
Many parents are surprised to learn that writing begins long before a child picks up a pencil.
Before children can successfully write letters, they must develop important concepts that are taught in our 3's program such as:
-
Top and bottom
-
Left and right
-
In front of and behind
-
Over and under
-
Near and far
-
Directional awareness
-
Visual tracking
-
Hand strength and coordination
For example, before a child can understand how to write the letter "T", they must first understand concepts such as starting at the top and moving down.
At Harmony School, children build these foundational skills through movement, games, stories, art projects, and everyday classroom experiences.

What is spatial awareness and why is it impotant?
Spatial awareness is a child's understanding of where objects and people exist in relation to one another.
Children learn concepts such as:
-
Above and below
-
Next to and between
-
Left and right
-
Inside and outside
-
In front of and behind
These concepts become important later when children learn:
-
Letter formation
-
Reading directionality
-
Number concepts
-
Following multi-step directions
-
Geometry and mathematics
Strong spatial awareness supports both academic learning and everyday problem-solving.
My child is shy/doesn't want to be separated from me. Should I wait another year?
Many parents worry that preschool may be difficult for their child or that their child is not ready, especially if they are shy.
In reality, shy children and those who struggle to separate from caregivers often benefit greatly from a nurturing preschool environment.
Experienced teachers help children gradually build confidence, independence, and social skills while respecting each child's individual personality and pace.
